Statement of the Position The Department of Early Childhood,
Elementary, Special Education within the School of Education at
Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor of Special Education (F0472) position, with an
anticipated start date of August 15, 2025. We seek candidates that
have expertise in curriculum development and instruction for
exceptional learners, inclusive classroom environments, and
research-based best practices in special education. Norfolk State

University. Overview of the Department Norfolk State University’s
Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education
(EESE) is housed in the School of Education (EESE). The department
offers undergraduate and graduate programs focused upon working
with children in P-12 school settings as well as community and
agency programs. Responsibilities The successful candidate will be
expected to: • Teach and develop courses in the Bachelor of Science
in Education (BSEd.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) programs in Special
Education — Undergraduate, in face-to-face and Graduate in an
online format. • Supervise undergraduate and master’s program
internships within local school districts and agencies. • Advise
and mentor students. • Contribute to making the School of Education
and University a safe, equitable, and socially just space for
students, other faculty, and staff. • Engage in program development
and curriculum reviews, and assessment of student learning. •
Provide support for program coordination and administration (e.g.,
recruitment, admissions, programming). • Collaborate with student
affairs professionals on campus, in Virginia, and in the profession
on programming, student internship and graduate assistantship
placements, and to advance the profession. • Provide service and
expertise to the program, the School of Education, and to the
University. Minimum Qualifications The review committee will seek
evidence of required qualifications in the candidate’s cover letter
and CV. The successful candidate must have: • An earned
doctorate/terminal degree (Ph.D./Ed.D.) in Special Education or
related field from an accredited (U.S.) or certified
(international) university. • Demonstrated evidence of inclusive
teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level that builds
engaging, relevant, and authentic learning experiences for
students. • Active involvement in professional associations and/or
in partnerships in the field. • Demonstrated evidence of
established or developing research agenda that informs teaching and
practice in the Special Education field. • Excellent communication,
collaboration, organization, and negotiation skills. Additional

will be given to those who have one or more of the following: •
Prior college, university, or professional association experience.
• State licensure or certification in teaching special education
(candidates who are licensed in other states can submit to the
Virginia Department of Education’s licensure department to obtain a
postgraduate professional license for the Commonwealth of
Virginia). • A strong diversity and social justice orientation. •
Experience advising students and building authentic learning
experiences to support student development and career aspirations.
• Teaching experience related to special education, internships,
social justice and equity, teaching and learning, and research
design. • Ability to teach a full range of special education
courses. • Experience developing collaborative partnerships with
