Job Description Job Description MHI Ship Repair & Services is a
major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S.
Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and
Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is
conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of
Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia. JOB SUMMARY: Primary point of
contact, provide oversite and daily operations within the
structural department. Responsibilities include meeting production
schedule, maintain resources and training needs within the
department. SUPERVISES: Asst. Shipfitting Superintendent ,
Shipfitting Leadperson , Shipfitting Specialist, 1st-3rd Class
Shipfitter, Handyman, Helper ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Supervises the
activities of the Shipfitting Department personnel directly or
indirectly and maximizes efficiency and productivity of supervisors
and production workers. Responsible for resolving issues with
regard to day-to-day operations. 2. Confers with Director of
Production, other Superintendents and subcontractors to coordinate
work schedules and prioritize work. 3. Ensures that machinery and
equipment are properly maintained for efficient production and
eliminates wasteful practices within the department. Responsible
for identifying improved methods, and efficient and economical
utilization of materials. Orders new equipment and material as
needed for ongoing jobs. 4. Conducts ship checks to ensure as
requested. Provides assistance to the estimating department in
developing cost estimates. 5. Ensures adherence to company
policies, safety standards, good housekeeping practices and on time
performances. Development of department procedures and training
outlines. 6. Maintains good employee relations practices within his
department and takes corrective action as required. 7. Oversees
hiring and release of department resources as required to maintain
production schedule demands. 8. Establishes accountabilities and
goals used for performance evaluation and conducts training.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Maintain training records within the
department. 2. Ability to investigate CAR (Corrective Action
Request) and provide clear response. 3. Perform other incidental
and related duties as required and assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. 12 years of related work
experience to include 10 years of management responsibilities. 3.
Minimum of two years of Technical School. 4. Must have in-depth
knowledge of NAVSEA and MSC standard items. Ability to interpret
blueprint and technical documentation related to shipfitter
requirements 5. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. 6. Requires
excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to
motivate others. 7. Basic computer skills. MHI Ship Repair &
