Job Description:
Job Description Job Description Description: Position Summary
The HVAC Service Technician will be responsible for diagnosing,
repairing, maintaining, and installing heating, ventilation, and
air-conditioning systems and related equipment in customer homes
(and possibly light commercial settings). The technician will serve
as a field ambassador for Bud’s — delivering high-quality, safe
work, clear communication with customers, and efficient resolution
of service calls. The role may include routine maintenance visits,
emergency service calls, system diagnostics and repairs,
change-outs, and customer education. Here is a detailed list of
tasks the technician is expected to perform: Travel (in a company
service truck) to assigned job sites, arrive on-time and ready to
perform service work. Assess and inspect HVAC systems (furnaces,
air-conditioners, heat pumps, duct-work, ventilation systems,
indoor air-quality equipment, etc.), identify faults or
inefficiencies. Perform system diagnostics: electrical testing,
mechanical inspection, refrigerant charge verification, airflow
measurement, thermostat and control checks. Troubleshoot and repair
HVAC equipment: replace faulty components (compressors, motors,
fans, capacitors, contactors, thermostats, sensors, control boards,
duct leaks, etc.). Perform preventative maintenance and tune-ups:
clean coils, change/inspect filters, lubricate bearings, adjust
belts/pulleys, check condensation drain lines, inspect ductwork and
registers. Install new HVAC systems or change-out units when
assigned (including removal of old equipment, installation of new
equipment, proper connections to refrigerant, electrical, gas/fuel,
ductwork and controls). Verify system performance after
service/installation: measure cooling/heating output, verify
set-points, ensure safety controls are functioning, ensure
compliance with local building codes and manufacturer
specifications. Maintain accurate records of each service call/job:
report work performed, parts used, time spent, job status, findings
and recommendations. Discuss findings and recommendations with
customers in clear, non-technical language: explain what was found,
what was done, what remains to be done (if applicable), and how to
maintain their system. Order or request required replacement parts,
maintain vehicle stock of common parts/tools, ensure service
vehicle is clean, maintained and stocked with required supplies.
Work in compliance with all relevant safety standards,
environmental regulations (e.g., refrigerant handling per Clean Air
Act / Section 608 certification requirements) and company policies.
Provide on-call or after-hours emergency service as needed
(weekends, evenings) in rotation. Support and collaborate with
dispatch/office staff to ensure efficient scheduling, parts
procurement, billing/invoicing, and follow-up visits. Identify
opportunities for additional service (e.g., indoor air-quality
improvements, system upgrade recommendations) and communicate them
to management or sales team. Stay current with product,
manufacturer and industry training (new technologies, refrigerants,
controls, smart HVAC systems) and apply best practices. Other
related duties as assigned by the Service Manager or company
leadership. Requirements: To succeed in this role, the ideal
candidate will bring: Completed HVAC training program or
apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience in HVAC
service/maintenance. Valid driver’s license, clean driving record
(for company vehicle use). Certification in refrigerant handling
(EPA Section 608 or equivalent) required. Strong knowledge of HVAC
systems (residential and/or light commercial): heating systems
(furnaces, boilers, heat pumps), air-conditioning systems,
ventilation, ductwork, controls, indoor air quality. Proficient
with diagnostic tools and test equipment (multimeter, gauge
manifold, airflow meter, etc.). Excellent troubleshooting and
mechanical/electrical repair skills. Good communication and
customer-service skills: ability to explain technical issues
clearly, listen to customer concerns, provide professional work.
Physical stamina and dexterity: ability to lift moderately heavy
equipment, work in confined spaces (attics, crawl spaces), work in
varied conditions (hot, cold, rooftops). Ability to work
independently in the field, manage time and prioritize scheduled
calls and emergency calls. Commitment to safety, following proper
procedures, using PPE, working safely around electrical, gas and
refrigerant systems. Flexible schedule: willing to work occasional
evenings, weekends, emergency calls. (Preferred) Additional
certifications or licenses (e.g., NATE certification, state HVAC
journeyman license) and experience with smart HVAC controls/IAQ
equipment.
