Job Description:

Job DescriptionPrimary Purpose of Position:To perform administrative and clinical procedures for adults with substance-abuse, mental health and co-occurring medical conditions. Duties would include triaging patients, conducting assessments, taking and recording vital signs, coordinating prescription refills, scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records and coordinating other services with external clinicians including primary care physicians and specialists. The MA will provide medical support to the Physician, Physician's Assistant, Family Nurse Practitioner, and nurses. They will review orders and provide any necessary feedback to medical staff. They will serve as a member of the treatment team and will assist with treatment planning for population served. Another function of this position is to process/request information from referral sources and relay that information to the treatment team. The MA will ensure patients are linked with primary care, releases are obtained and the medical record contains current documents regarding medical conditions/treatments. The MA will complete required medical records documentation. Additionally the employee will provide services to clients, which include but are not limited to counseling, establishing client aftercare plans, arranging identified treatment services and needs related to life domains and initiating contact and collateral work with family members or support systems. This position will maintain accurate and up to date referral sources, and maintain a therapeutic environment and promote appropriate and healthy interpersonal behavior.Work Schedule:This position will maintain a 40 hour workweek. They will generally work an eight hour day during typical day work hours and will be expected to show flexibility in scheduling depending on client and Program's need.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A working knowledge of mental health and psychiatric disorders. Knowledge of medications and side effects, good nursing judgment, skill to be able to evaluate patients needs, identify crisis situations and be able to handle situations appropriately. To record concisely required medical record documentation. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with clients, and effective rapport with families and significant others. Ability to effectively identify with mental health clients and community groups in contributing general information and education related to mental health issues. Ability to develop effective working relationships with professionals involved in treating mental health problems.
  • Required minimum Training: Graduate of a certified medical assistant training program, or Registered Medical Assistant certificate, or Medical Assistant training to include Phlebotomy, Medication Aide, or nursing.
  • Additional Training/Experience: Must be able to meet Competency requirements. Crisis intervention, CPR, TB training and screening, Blood-borne Pathogens Training, Confidentiality, HIPAA and Clients Rights Training within 120 days of employment. License or Certifications Required by Statute or Regulation: Current NC Driver's License required. Medical Assistant certification (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensed in the state of North Carolina is preferred.
