Job Title: Registered Nurse - Labor and Delivery Profession:
Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours (19:00 - 07:00) Experience:
Minimum years of experience required License: VA License or proof
of compact license Certifications: AWHONN Intermediate, BLS, NRP,
EPIC experience, Community Hospital Experience, Trauma Level 1
Experience Must-Have: - Experienced in Labor and Delivery, capable
of working in postpartum and nursery - Previous charge experience
preferred - Able to float based on unit needs - Available for every
other weekend Description: Must be experienced in Labor and
Delivery. Capable of working in postpartum and nursery. The unit
manages approximately 350 deliveries per year. It is a small unit
where all nurses are cross-trained in all areas of Obstetrics.
Floating is required based on the needs of the facility. Every
other weekend is required. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 during
the day, 1:2 at night, and 1:6 on weekends. Required skills include
the following: Work settings include Antepartum, Labor and
Delivery, High-Risk Antepartum, Level I Nursery, and Mother/Baby.
Assist with sterile speculum exams, non-stress tests, reflex
checks, and sterile vaginal exams. Triage obstetrical patients and
use external fetal monitoring. Required competencies include the
use of internal fetal monitoring and intrauterine pressure catheter
placement. Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate
patterns are necessary. Medication management includes
anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, antihypertensives, magnesium
sulfate therapy, and Pitocin. Labor and delivery management
includes amnioinfusion, assisting with high-risk deliveries and
vaginal deliveries, and managing hemorrhages or shock. Required
newborn care skills include assisting with circumcision and
assessing the site post-op, discharge teaching for parents, cord
care, and newborn assessments. Familiarity with metabolic screens,
neonatal abstinence syndrome, and phototherapy is necessary.
Teaching circumcision care and thermoregulation to parents is also
essential.
