Description of Work

Pay Plan/Grade GN06 - Recruitment Range:$31,200 - $32,780

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work site for this position may be remote/virtual on a temporary basis until it is determined that this position will report to a permanent office location when conditions allow. This position, if remote, may require attendance at designated workplace meetings or in the performance of business at various on-site locations.

The Marine Fisheries Technician II serves as a recreational port agent and technical assistant to the program biologist in the Northern District Manteo office. The Marine Fisheries Technician II conducts creel census interviews as part of the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) to determine fishing location, fishing time, catch, species identification, size and other biological parameters. Interviews are conducted using an Android tablet. The technician will verify, code and submit data for analysis. Strong oral communication skills and the ability to meet deadlines and work with minimum supervision is required. This position will be responsible for for-hire data collection including interviewing captains of for-hire fishing vessels to collect fishing effort information, as well as at-sea biological sampling on headboats. Monitoring nighttime recreational fishing activities will be required. Weekend work is required. Must have the ability to swim and travel on-board large fishing vessels for extended periods. Significant in-state travel is required. The technician must be able to travel to assigned sites throughout eastern North Carolina.

  • Knowledge and identification of marine and estuarine fish, crustaceans, and mollusks;
  • Knowledge of recreational fisheries and associated fishing gears;
  • Knowledge oflocal water bodies;
  • Experience interacting with the public in face to face situations;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs to collect, compile and organize data;
  • A valid driver's license is required.

A skills test will be administered to all interviewed candidates.

Applicants who were born after January 1, 1988 must be in compliance with the requirements for boating safety education, General Statute 75A-16.2.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
